Arnold Palmer Learning Center (APLC) aimed to create a new and vibrant educational hub, driven by the desire to welcome the children of the community and the region into the Bob O’Connor Golf Course at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh. Housing The First Tee-Pittsburgh (TFTP), its objective was to teach young people values such as integrity, respect and perseverance through the game of golf. Catering to TFTP’s mission of developing life skills, interpersonal skills, and athletic skills through the medium of golf, the clubhouse offers a spacious multipurpose room for both physical and virtual practice. An expansive putting green allows patrons of all ages to refine their basic skills and allows for personal instruction that offsets demand for the main course. Golf simulation stations allow golfers the option to train more powerful swings in a controlled environment. As with the majority of interior spaces, the multipurpose room can be seen from the central collector space for easy parental spectatorship. Outdoor spaces were developed around the building to promote the dialogue between indoors and outdoors. These spaces include a rooftop terrace as well as a veranda facing the 18th hole of the golf course.
The design of the new facility was driven by inclusivity, to welcome children of all backgrounds within Pittsburgh and its surrounding communities. Working collaboratively with The First Tee-Pittsburgh and community members, the co-creative process was driven by the vision to create a socially and educationally engaging place for the community that transcends generational and socioeconomic boundaries – a place for all. Providing space for retail, education, training, socializing, and meeting, Arnold Palmer Learning Center is a gathering destination offering a safe and welcoming environment for a variety of user groups.
APLC is located within Pittsburgh's Schenley Park, which is visited by bus riders, bicyclists, hikers, walkers, and athletes alike in all seasons. When Arnold Palmer Learning Center's users arrive at the balcony, the stunning view of the course in the foreground against the backdrop of the city skyline makes it a gem for the city of Pittsburgh.
